Top 10 Peak District Locations

These are my favourite places in the Peak District. From the stunning sweeping vistas at Bamford Edge to the Fairy Tale Woodlands of Padley Gorge and beyond. Find out what makes these locations my favourite places to photograph.

1. Bamford Edge

One of the most popular places in the Peak District and for good reason, Bamford Edge has to count as one of the best views in the world. The best time to visit this stunning location is at the tail end of summer, when the vibrant heather covers the hills and makes for some fantastic foreground interest.

2. Chrome Hill

Chrome Hill isn’t as busy as Bamford Edge, but the views are equally as stunning. The wonderful thing about this location is that all day and all seasons work well here. If arriving here for sunrise you may be fortunate to witness a temperature inversion, which can add a tremendous ethereal atmosphere to your photographs.

And, if you arrive here at sunset you may be fortunate enough to see some amazing side light illuminate the landscape.

4. Mam Tor

Perhaps the most popular location in the Peak District is Mam Tor. There are a variety of viewpoints at this location, including the classic gate shot. But I think my favourite photograph from here is this one of the winding road at the back of Mam Tor, weaving through the landscape towards Edale.

3. Padley Gorge

If you are thinking of visiting the Peak District for it’s ancient woodlands I can think of no better place than Padley Gorge. Awash with ancient trees either side of a steeply banked gorge there is plenty to see and photograph.

The best time of the year is during the Autumn and Winter when the woodland really comes alive, and if you encounter mist or fog on your visit all the better. Such conditions can see scenes transformed as though imagined from a fairy tale. A truly wonderful place for landscape and woodland photography.

5. The Roaches

The Roaches is a fantastic place to visit and there are many things to see and photograph here. Perhaps the most iconic view from this location are these two rock formations which jut out from the landscape.
